Alan Turing is probably best known as a code-cracker, but he is also an extremely influential figure in the fields of computer science and artificial intelligence. Sadly, Turing is also remembered as a victim of the UK’s ‘gross indecency’ laws; prosecuted in 1952 for homosexual acts, Turing was chemically castrated and eventually died at the age of 41. He was posthumously pardoned in 2014.
Alan Turing IS KNOWN FOR...
- Cracking coded messages that helped the Allies to win the Second World War
- Devising the ‘imitation game’ (now known as the Turing test) to test how well a machine can imitate human intelligence
- Inventing the Turing machine, a mathematical model for computation
Alan Turing was portrayed by Sherlock actor Benedict Cumberbatch in the 2014 film The Imitation Game.
