Alan Turing is probably best known as a code-cracker, but he is also an extremely influential figure in the fields of computer science and artificial intelligence. Sadly, Turing is also remembered as a victim of the UK’s ‘gross indecency’ laws; prosecuted in 1952 for homosexual acts, Turing was chemically castrated and eventually died at the age of 41. He was posthumously pardoned in 2014.
Alan Turing IS KNOWN FOR...
Cracking coded messages that helped the Allies to win the Second World War
Devising the ‘imitation game’ (now known as the Turing test) to test how well a machine can imitate human intelligence
Inventing the Turing machine, a mathematical model for computation
Alan Turing was portrayed by Sherlock actor Benedict Cumberbatch in the 2014 film The Imitation Game.
