Lyn Evans – nicknamed ‘Evans the Atom’ in the grand tradition of Welsh people going by their jobs because so many people share the same few names – was originally going to study chemistry. He eventually switched to physics because he found it easier! You may not have heard his name before, but you’ve almost certainly heard of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the largest particle collider in the world. Evans was the project leader of the LHC, a role that earned him a CBE among many other honours.
Lyn Evans IS KNOWN FOR...
Overseeing construction of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), one of the biggest scientific projects in history
Running a lab with more than 2,000 members of staff
Serving as Director of the Linear Collider Collaboration
Evans has stated that the biggest hurdle he encountered in his career was passing O Level French (a requirement for his preferred university course). Ironically, he ended up working at CERN in Switzerland, speaking French almost as often as he spoke English!
