Stephen Hawking was one of the most famous scientists of the past century. He used a wheelchair and a communication aid due to his motor neurone disease, but his illness didn’t stop him from publishing numerous books (including the best-selling A Brief History of Time), working as a professor at the University of Cambridge, and reshaping the field of theoretical physics.
Stephen Hawking IS KNOWN FOR...
Predicting that black holes release radiation (known as ‘Hawking radiation’)
Publishing A Brief History of Time, which has sold over 25 million copies
Appearing on The Simpsons and The Big Bang Theory, among other TV shows
For much of his life, Hawking ‘spoke’ using a communication aid with an American voice, leading many people to mistake Hawking for an American. Hawking’s speech synthesiser was made in 1986, and while more realistic-sounding voice technology has since become available, Hawking stuck with that voice until the end of his life as he had come to identify with it.
